Creating a Livable Living Room - Before and After

To the many of you who have been following along over the last couple of months, thank you!! I love hearing your feedback and having you join the journey!

I've been hard at work on a fun living room redesign project and am thrilled to share the journey and results with you! I had the amazing opportunity to work on a beautiful home built in the 1800's and restore it to a time period in design that would have been traditional in the time period in which it was built. We got to incorporate lots of natural stone and woodwork sourced locally from right here in Western New York! Even better is the fact that the entire space was designed for a busy mom with two active kiddos and their lifestyle. Good design is not trendy or sterile. Good design results in creating a space that is comfortable, inviting and purpose driven. This busy family needed a primary living space that they could fall into at the end of a long day to snuggle up and play a game, create artwork, read a book or watch a movie with room for each of them and their 3 dogs to just be.

In order to accomplish this we had a few tasks to accomplish:

  1. Move the TV from above the mantle and give the fireplace the distinction and scale that it would have had 150 years ago and a space to display and enjoy the things that matter most to the family...have you ever wondered why in modern design we keep giving the standard fare flat screen TV the place of distinction above the mantle in modern living?

  2. Create a space for the TV that was cohesive to the space but intentional in design so that the living room purpose would be focused on gathering, conversation, relaxation and hobbies.

  3. Create a seating area for the kiddos to lounge, read, draw, you name it.

  4. Repaint the foyer and living room with a cohesive color palette to convert it from two distinct spaces into one welcoming space with great flow.

Here are some before pictures. By all accounts, a great living room, but one that was missing the mark for this family in terms of the intentions that they had for their lifestyle and needs.

Without further ado and a lot of hard work, check out the transformation from living room to a room that you really live in!

We swapped out the window treatments with white shutters so that the stone fireplace really had the opportunity to be the focal point and to brighten up a room that doesn't receive any direct sunlight. We painted the walls a lighter/warmer earth tone to pickup the taupe in the stone.

We partnered with WNY Wood Products, an amazing local lumber supplier, to create this gorgeous dimensional black walnut slab for the hearth that is cozy and warm and just pulls you over to have a seat. We also sourced the solid live edge pine mantle beam that adds another natural element to warm up the space and reintroduce the building materials that would have been standard fare 150 years ago when the home was built. They are local in Orchard Park and doing some unbelievable work, check them out on Instagram and Facebook at @wnywoodproducts...if you love the product prepare to be blown away by their competitive and fair pricing!

We completed this space with a wraparound window seat which includes hidden storage for blankets and pillows providing flexible seating and lounging. A custom matching side table (black walnut also sourced from WNY Wood Products) completes the cozy nook that can be moved around for a game of cards, mom's morning coffee a puzzle or Lego building!

There is no greater reward than creating an intentional space that even the 9 year-old can't get enough of!! I'm so thrilled and thankful to have been trusted with the design and construction of such an important space for such a great family!

Stay tuned for more, it's been a fun and busy Fall so far and there are so many wonderful projects to share.
